Dell Dimension XPS R400

I bet you didn’t expect me to have another computer sitting around, did you?? I actually have two others but they aren’t nearly as interesting as the last two. This one lies kind of in a middle ground of interesting and boring.

This is my Dell Inspiron laptop. I found it at my job last year I think? Maybe earlier. This one wasn’t really much of a project, outside of it needing a deep cleaning and a reset. Whoever owned it had installed like 300 of those hidden object games that they sell at Wal-mart.

SIDE TANGENT: What is up with that? Don’t get me wrong, I love seeing new PC games on disc still being sold at Wal-mart of all places, even if they’re stupid hidden object games; But, who is buying them? Is there a niche group of old people deep into the hidden object game scene?

I looked into it. It’s all through this one company called ‘Legacy Games’. They MASS-PRODUCE hundreds of these barebones, basic ass games.

I just CANNOT see how it’s worth making that stuff anymore, especially since optical drives don’t really exist on many newer computers.

Anyway, I got this thing before I had fully integrated my Pavilion PC into my setup, and I was looking for a way to play the Sims 1 and other games without having to pull out the whole computer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers and have them taking ALL of the space in my room.

And it worked perfectly for that! It’s a fairly simple laptop, but more than capable of performing the things I was wanting from it. It’s a Windows XP laptop that will run older games and software, burn discs, and more.

I love the display. It's a 14.1” 1024x768 LCD; While the viewing angle is pretty narrow, it has a very crisp and clear picture. It has an Intel Celeron 1.40GHz processor, 500-something MB of ram, and some kind of integrated graphics chip. I COULDN’T TELL YOU. But, what I can tell you is that it can play the Sims 1, and that is good enough for me.

I was also able to play Strong Bad’s Cool Game 4 Attractive People on high settings at 640x480 at a stable 30 FPS… So let that be your benchmark for this thing.

Nowadays I don’t really have much use for it as I once did; However, I plan on hanging onto it as a backup computer, or if one day I’d like to go over to a friend's house and play Roller Coaster Tycoon or something…

That’s all I have to say about this one… Hope it was at least somewhat entertaining.
